Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will brief reporters Thursday afternoon on his visit to El Salvador, where he sought to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to the nation last month.

The Salvadoran government on Wednesday rebuffed his request to speak with Abrego Garcia and denied his visit to El Salvador's notorious CECOT prison. The Trump administration has insisted Abrego Garcia is tied to gang activity, but he and his wife have denied any connection.

Van Hollen's trip came after the White House has seemingly refused to comply with a Supreme Court order calling on President Trump and his administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia's return to the U.S. They have argued that his fate is up to El Salvador.

The press conference is expected to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
