Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) on Friday afternoon will brief reporters on his trip to El Salvador, where he met with the man who was mistakenly deported in mid-March.
Van Hollen faced an uphill battle with officials in El Salvador when he requested a meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was sent to the Central American nation's most notorious prison. Democrats have railed against President Trump and the White House for refusing to facilitate his return, after a Supreme Court order required them to do so.
The Maryland senator's interaction with Abrego Garcia on Thursday came after he was twice denied the chance to speak with him in person or via phone.
Trump and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukeke — who both said Monday that they would not bring Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. — pushed back against Van Hollen following his trip.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. EDT.
