Sussan Ley may be the first woman to lead the federal Liberal party ahead of a showdown with Angus Taylor that shapes as a defining moment for the beleaguered party.

The Liberal party room will meet at 10am on Tuesday to choose a new leader and deputy leader after a disastrous federal election that cost Peter Dutton his own seat of Dickson.
