President Trump on Thursday afternoon is holding an event at the White House centered on his plans to overhaul the Education Department.
During the event, he is also expected to sign an executive order that will begin the process of dismantling the department as much as the administration can without congressional moves. The order comes after the Trump administration unveiled last week that it would lay off nearly half of its education workforce.
The president, with support from Education Secretary Linda McMahon, has consistently argued that shuttering the department and moving policy back to the states would help to raise the U.S. in global education rankings.
The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. EDT.
