Employment minister Murray Watt says workers on a minimum wage should be able to “get ahead”, as the Fair Work Commission goes through its annual wage review.
As in previous years, the government won’t recommend a specific number to the commission, but says it should be above the rate of inflation.
The minimum wage in Australia is only about $47,000 a year, so we believe we can afford to see those workers receive a pay rise that is economically sustainable but also allows them to keep up with the cost of living and actually get a little bit.
