Smithers RCMP responded to a collision involving a semi-truck, a pickup truck, and a snowmobile on Highway 16 near Blue Jay Road on Jan. 8.
Emergency Health Services also attended the scene that occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Police said a semi-truck was travelling eastbound on Highway 16 when the driver observed an obstruction on the roadway. The driver slowed, pulled over, and activated hazard lights.
A pickup truck travelling behind the semi-truck attempted to pass and collided with the obstruction. Police determined the obstruction was two individuals attempting to push a snowmobile across the highway.
The snowmobile had been driven onto the highway and became stuck while attempting to cross. The snowmobile operator was issued violation tickets for operating without a valid driver’s licence and for operating without a number plate.
The pickup truck driver was issued a violation ticket for unsafe passing.
The two individuals associated with the snowmobile were transported to the hospital for assessment.
Smithers RCMP reminds off-road vehicle operators that highways are not designated crossings for snowmobiles.
“Traffic-related complaints continue to be the most common call for service received by Smithers RCMP. Incidents such as this highlight the significant time required to respond to traffic safety concerns, which can limit officers’ availability for other duties,” said Acting Sergeant Lewis Stryde.
