VPD marine division rescues woman off yacht after assault report

The R.G. McBeath, the new flagship of the VPD marine division.

Vancouver police and the emergency response team stormed a boat in heavy seas Thursday morning on the Strait of Georgia to rescue a woman who’d called 911 to say she had been assaulted.

VPD located the 12-metre motor yacht headed west toward the Strait of Georgia in “heavy conditions” that included two-metre rolling waves and 15-knot winds at about 6 p.m. The R.G. McBeath V.C., the department’s new flagship, was used in the pursuit and a manoeuvre was used where the boat is pinned up against the side of the target vessel.

Officers found the suspect and firearms. The woman who reported the assault was rescued safely and the boat returned to Vancouver.

VPD are looking to recommend charges of assault and forcible confinement against the suspect.

“This was a challenging operation for us, had it not been for the new R.G. McBeath vessel that we have, this may have been a much more difficult task — definitely upping the risk to members involved,” VPD said in an Instagram post.
