Police have confirmed the name of the woman who is presumed to have drowned in the North Thompson River in a car incident on Sunday, May 17.
The 24-year-old woman is Benina Jepkoech, according to Brett Urano, division media relations officer with the RCMP.
“At this time, neither she nor the vehicle has been recovered,” he said.
Jepkoech is presumed to have drowned after her car went into the North Thompson River in Kamloops.
According to the original release from police, the car left the road near Schubert Drive and Birch Avenue at around 6:21 p.m., going into the river.
A 21-year-old woman who was the passenger in the vehicle was rescued by three bystanders who jumped into the river to help.
The scene saw a response from Kamloops RCMP, the BC Ambulance Service, Kamloops Search and Rescue, and Kamloops Fire and Rescue. Search efforts continued the day after the incident, which included RCMP Air Services.
Supt. Jeff Pelley, officer-in-charge of the Kamloops detachment, thanked everyone who contributed to the rescue and search.
