A rockfall on Monday night has closed Route 140 into Yosemite National Park between the small communities of Briceburg and El Portal. California Department of Transportation spokesperson Brian Hooker told the newspaper SF Gate that wet weather in the narrow canyon caused the slide.
“So, for right now, we do have it closed from Forrester Road through Incline out to Briceburg. And that’s going to be a long-term, extended closure until our crews can go out there and remove the debris and inspect the hillside so that we can reopen the road safely for motorists,” Hooker said.
California Highway Patrol said on social media: “Motorists should avoid this route and seek alternative highways (SR-41, SR-120) into Yosemite National Park.” Hooker added, “Our teams go out and inspect the hillside prior to these meteorological events to make sure that things are in good order. But unfortunately, mother nature can sometimes throw these events at us.”
If you plan on visiting Yosemite this month, be sure to plan accordingly and to not attempt to drive in through the town of Mariposa. There is no estimated time for reopening the road.
