BURSTUnited Way BC is putting the call out for financial donations to help the thousands of people in B.C. currently under wildfire evacuation orders and alerts.
People are being asked to donate to the United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund which provides immediate and long-term support for nearly 10,000 people in several communities affected by about 90 wildfires province-wide.
The fund provides assistance not only during emergencies, but throughout the months and years of recovery that follow. Donations help local organizations respond to immediate needs while also supporting longer-term community recovery, resilience-building, and preparedness efforts, according to the July 21 press release.
In Chilliwack, evacuees from Boston Bar and the Fraser Canyon are being welcomed to the Shxwhá:y Village’s reception centre which United Way is supporting.
“Wildfires are affecting communities across British Columbia, bringing uncertainty, displacement, and loss for many people,” said Michael McKnight, president and CEO of United Way BC. “British Columbians have always come together to support one another in times of crisis. Through the United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund, we can help ensure communities have access to critical supports not only during an emergency, but throughout the recovery process that follows.”
United Way BC works with local non-profit organizations, community agencies, and emergency response partners. Funding may support essential services such as food assistance, mental health and wellness supports, outreach services, community connections, and other recovery initiatives identified by local organizations.
