A 43-year-old man whose family reported him overdue from a hike six days ago has been found, after a massive search in the Squamish-area wilderness.
Stanislav Volo was seen getting off the Sea to Sky Gondola shortly before noon on Aug. 30, having planned a hike along the Mount Habrich Loop, but didn’t return when expected.
Local RCMP were joined by searchers from Squamish SAR, police dogs, the Lower Mainland emergency response team, RCMP air services and the crew from the Sea to Sky Gondola in the nearly weeklong search effort.
Police say Volo was found on Friday and has been taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Squamish RCMP provided no further details while thanking their search partners, media and the public for their help.
In a social media post, Volo’s elated sister also thanked those involved in the search and rescue. “Stas has been found!” Ola Volo wrote over a picture of a dishevelled but beaming Volo flanked by two smiling rescuers.
“I haven’t seen him yet but we are on our way to him right now,” wrote the artist and illustrator . “These have been the longest six days of our lives. We held out hope every second, and somehow, he is coming back to us.
“To every single SAR member who searched for my brother, the incredible Sea to Sky Gondola crew, and everyone who shared his face, sent us messages, prayed, hoped and carried us through these six days — thank you from the deepest part of our hearts.”
