Squamish Wildfire Forces Evacuation of Park

BC Parks has ordered an immediate evacuation of the Alice Lake area due to a nearby wildfire, prioritising public safety. Visitors are prohibited from entering the wildfire zone until further notice. Alice Lake is home to the popular crag Debeck’s Hill.

“People are encouraged to stay informed through official sources such as the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the local regional district, and DriveBC,” BC Parks said. “You can still visit other BC Parks that remain unaffected by wildfire. Find other places to visit on the find a park page.”

Nearby recreation trails are temporarily closed. The Squamish wildfire, now 20.2 hectares, is expected to require weeks of firefighting efforts. The BC Wildfire Service, with 50 ground crew members, is supported by 20 Squamish Fire Rescue and four Whistler Fire Rescue personnel, working to contain the fire and protect nearby structures. The district has closed several trails near the fire.

Squamish Fire Rescue Chief Aaron Foote reported that burning debris from trees had rolled down steep hillsides, coming within 40 metres of homes overnight as firefighters worked to protect the community. “Currently, structures are not at risk due to adequate humidity levels,” Foote said at a briefing, noting that sprinkler systems have been deployed for days to safeguard properties.
