BURSTIn Loving Memory ~
June 11, 1942 – August 22, 2026
It is with great sadness and a quiet sense of peace that the family of Carol Lee (Robinson) O’Coffey announces her passing on August 22, 2026, in Smithers, BC, at the age of 84.
Carol was born in Smithers to George “Topsy” Robinson and Winnifred “Winnie” Robinson. Raised alongside her sister, Gail, Smithers remained the community she proudly considered home. She graduated from Smithers Secondary School with the Class of 1960, where she was involved in student council and was nominated “Ideal Girl,” recognized for her wonderful laugh and sense of humour.
Following graduation, Carol began her career with Canadian National Railway, working in Smithers, Prince Rupert and Edmonton. It was in Edmonton in 1962 that she met Allan “Al” O’Coffey, the love of her life. Al proposed just three weeks after they began dating—because, as they say, when you know, you know. They married on June 30, 1962, in Smithers and shared 64 years of marriage filled with love, family, travel, adventure and companionship.
Carol and Al raised five children: Dennis, Tim, Shawna, Erin and Tara. Family was always at the heart of Carol’s life. She took great joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured family gatherings, holidays, camping trips and time spent together.
A hardworking, dependable and organized woman, Carol built a varied career in secretarial and accounting positions, including work with CNR, the Bank of Nova Scotia, Probation, BC Forestry and Carnaby Mill. She and Al also co-owned Wayside Foods with their son Dennis in Smithers before returning to Alberta, where Carol later worked for Suncor Energy.
Following the heartbreaking loss of their infant daughter Shawna, Carol and Al became deeply involved with the Kinsmen and Kinnettes. Their commitment to fundraising and community service continued for many years, eventually earning them lifetime memberships.
Carol was determined, independent and never afraid to speak her mind. Beneath her strong exterior was a warm and loving heart. She cherished friendships, travelling and camping, her beloved dogs—especially Sumo—and her passion for quilting and growing beautiful Hoyas.
Carol will be lovingly remembered by Al, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister Gail, extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents and daughter, Shawna.
Celebration of Life: Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Pioneer Place, Smithers, BC. Refreshments will follow.
The family sincerely thanks all caregivers, medical staff, hospice teams, friends and loved ones who supported Carol with compassion and kindness.
Rest peacefully, Carol. You will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered and forever cherished.
