The federal byelection in the riding of North Vancouver-Capilano is underway.
On Monday, polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.
The riding was vacated by Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, so he could take the post of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.
The riding includes the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and a small part of the eastern waterfront edge of West Vancouver.
Created in 1998, the riding has been Liberal since 2015. Between 2008 and 2015, it was held by Conservative Andrew Saxton and, before that, by Liberal Don Bell from 2004 to 2008. Between 1993 and 2004, the seat was held by Ted White under the Reform, Alliance and Conservative banners.
Wilkinson was elected in 2015 and served in several high-profile ministerial roles. He was dropped from cabinet after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s win in April 2025.
Liberal political strategist Braeden Caley, who most recently served as Carney’s deputy chief of staff, is running for the Liberals.
The Conservative Party of Canada candidate is Stephen Curran, who lost to Wilkinson in 2025. In that election, Curran secured 34 per cent of the vote compared to 60 per cent for Wilkinson.
The federal NDP candidate is Stephen Tweedale and the federal Green candidate is Shelley Luce.
This is one of three federal byelections in Canada on Monday. The others are the Liberal stronghold of Beaches-East York in Ontario and the Conservative stronghold of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.
Going into the byelections, the Liberals held 170 seats in Parliament, the Conservatives, 139, and other opposition parties have a combined 27. There are seven vacancies in the 343-seat house.
