Climber Dies on Everest as Others Summit

Philipp Santiago II was at camp four on Mount Everest when he suddenly died while preparing to leave for the summit. Sadly, he’s one of several climbers to have died in the Himalaya this season.

The Himalayan Times has reported that two Sherpa who were flown to hospital with acute mountain sickness have also died. And an American climber died while attempting Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain. Last week, a French climber named Margareta Morin died while attempting to climb Kanchenjunga.

While some teams are just now making their way up out of base camp, dozens of climbers have already summited. Earlier this year, we reported that a team of climbers was hoping to climb Everest with the aid of xenon gas – that team is just about to start up.

In other Everest news, American climber Tyler Andrews turned back at camp three during his attempt at a no-oxygen speed ascent/descent of Everest. Ecuadorian climber Patricio Arevalo, however, did reach the summit this week without using supplementary oxygen.
