Trump Government Approves Yosemite Reservation System

Yosemite National Park had its busiest year ever in 2024, which probably means the famous California park can expect the same or more people in 2025. The park will implement a new reservation system to manage crowds and protect resources this year.

Earlier this month, the new Trump administration announced it would cancel the existing Yosemite reservation system, which left park officials scrambling. However, after months of pressure from park staff, lawyers and media, the federal government has given the green light to a new pilot reservation system.

“This is such a win for all — the special landscape that is Yosemite, the wildlife that live in the park, and the visitors,” Beth Pratt, a local conservationist working on a book called Yosemite Wildlife, to the media outlet SFGATE. “This reservation system will help prevent irreparable damage to this beloved landscape, allow the park wildlife to thrive, make for a better quality visitor experience, and ensure that Yosemite remains ‘unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations’ — the stated mission of the National Park Service.”

And Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said, “I’m glad there’s a reservation system. But I also hope NPS has the capacity to deal with the increase in visitors this year.” We recently talked to Yager about a rockfall incident on Half Dome in 1986 – read it here.
