The man facing a murder charge following a Langley shooting has a lengthy criminal record, including previous convictions for assault, court records in B.C. and Alberta show.
Justin Rory Hopkins-Jones is facing a charge of second-degree murder after a 47-year-old was found shot to death in a quiet neighbourhood on Brydon Crescent in Langley City on May 26.
Persons charged with a crime are innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
In 2011, Hopkins-Jones was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm for a March 12, 2010 attack in Kelowna. He was sentenced to probation, a fine, and a five-year ban on owning or possessing guns.
After that, B.C. court records show no further charges until 2025. However, at some point between then and 2017, he appears to have moved to the Calgary area.
According to Alberta court records, in mid-2017, Hopkins-Jones pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and one count of breaching conditions. Several other charges, including mischief, were dropped.
Hopkins-Jones was sentenced to 87 days in prison, and a 10-year firearm ban.
Just a few months after those proceedings had wrapped up, on Aug. 24, 2017, a woman was run over by a pickup truck in Calgary, sustaining serious injuries.
Hopkins-Jones was again charged with a string of offences, and almost a year later officially pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for a police officer.
He had been in jail for the 334 days between his arrest and sentencing. Pre-trial custody in Canada counts towards any eventual jail sentence at a rate of 1.5 days of time per day of sentence.
Having been credited with 501 days in prison, Hopkins-Jones served one more day behind bars, along with two years of probation.
In 2025, Hopkins-Jones was back in B.C., where he was charged with second-degree murder in Kamloops.
According to media reports, on Sept. 27, 2025, 39-year-old Jason Pinette was found badly beaten at a Kamloops bus stop, and later died of his injuries.
Hopkins-Jones was arrested and charged several days later. Charges were dropped by the B.C. Prosecution Service on March 27.
Hopkins-Jones is scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on the Langley second-degree murder charge on June 26. He remains in custody.
