A snowmobiler is dead following an avalanche triggered in the Omineca Mountains about seven hours north of Fort St. James.
According to Avalanche Canada, two snowmobilers triggered a slab avalanche near Johanson Lake on April 14.
One person ended up on the surface while another snowmobiler was fully buried. While the snowmobiler called for help to a recreational snowmobile cabin/camp via satellite messaging, they also tried to locate the buried individual without any success.
A second group arrived on scene approximately 25 minutes after the incident. They located and excavated the person, who did not survive.
The burial depth was reported as approximately 1.8 m deep, stated Avalanche Canada.
The size of the avalanche was indicated to be size 2.5 or large enough to bury, injure, or kill a person. The slab measured 170 metres wide by 650 metres in length.
This death is the 10th avalanche-related fatality in B.C. since January.
