BURSTTeenage crusher Bayes Wilder has just climbed Diarrhea Mouth 5.14d (9a) in Rifle, Colorado. It’s a Joe Kinder route from 2018 and has seen several repetitions since, including a second ascent from Jon Cardwell and repeats from Tyler Thompson and Jonathan Siegrist, among others. Both Thompson and Siegrist believe it to be low in the grade.
“Fun weekend out at Rifle,” said Wilder on Instagram. “Nice to finally do this one after a couple sessions. Such a cool climb with very hard, powerful moves and being a tough power endurance route. Psyched to do some more Rifle climbing in the beautiful canyon.”
Wilder is an incredibly talented young climber. He is part of the prestigious Team ABC, coached by Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou. The team has fostered some of the top climbers in the world, including Shawn and Brooke Raboutou, Colin Duffy, Megan Mascarenas, and Margo Hayes. At only 10 years old, Wilder sent his first 5.14a, Rodeo Free Europe, in Wild Iris, Wyoming. Four months later, he climbed his first 5.14c, Southern Smoke at the Red River Gorge.
In March this year, he climbed Twenty-Four Karats 5.14c at Solar Collector in the Red River Gorge. Two days later, he sent Golden Ticket 5.14c, a classic 5-star line at The Chocolate Factory. In August, he spent time in Céüse and was working on Bibliographie 5.15c, and while he didn’t send it this time, he said on Instagram that he made some good links and would be psyched to return. He also recently sent the unbelievably stunning line Doubloons, a 5.14b that sits at approximately 13,000 ft near the summit of Mount Blue Sky – the route is among the highest sport climbs in the United States.
