Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he thinks President Trump’s tariffs and trade war are going to hurt American consumers and workers.
“His trade war is hurting American consumers and workers and it will hurt more,” Carney said while campaigning in Ontario, per The Associated Press. “I see that American consumer confidence is at a multi-year low.”
Carney, who was recently sworn in to replace former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has clashed with Trump as the president implemented his 25 percent tariff plan on Canada and Mexico.
He recently called for a snap federal election to take place in April, noting that Canada needs to “build the strongest economy” and “deal” with Trump’s tariff impacts.
There’s a growing international concern over Trump plunging the U.S. into a trade war and Americans are worried prices on everyday goods will go up.
Carney highlighted a common Canadian criticism of Trump, who has regularly claimed he wants to acquire the northern country and make it the 51st state of the U.S.
“He wants to break us to America can own us,” he said. “And it will never ever happen because we just don’t look out for ourselves we look out for each other.”
Carney, a former banker, was chosen by Canada’s Liberal party at the start of this month after Trudeau stepped down.
The new leader called for the snap election, which was to be expected as he does not have a seat in Parliament and the Liberal Party is not in the majority.
Carney will have to face off against Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre on April 28.
He spoke with constituents near the Ambassador Bridge, which is considered the busiest U.S.-Canadian border crossing. It connects Detroit, Mich. and Ontario and fuels 25 percent of all trade between the two countries, The Associated Press reported.
Carney noted that there is hundreds of billions of dollars in goods that is transported across the bridge each year. There are paychecks and jobs that depend on that money, the outlet reported.
“The relationship between Canada and the United States has changed. We did not change it,” he said.
