Homicide investigators have identified “persons of interest” in the March gangland slaying of Surrey resident Jaskaran Singh Minhas.

But they are appealing to the public for more information about a red Dodge Charger used during the fatal Surrey shooting, then set on fire a short distance away in Delta.

Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said in a news release Monday that officers “believe the suspects were also using the Dodge Charger in the weeks leading up to the shooting, including for planning purposes.”

Investigators are hoping members of the public might recall seeing the Charger.

Minhas, 29, was shot to death about 5:25 p.m. on March 3 while inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the Scott Road Crossing shopping centre in the 7900-block of 120th Street.

Photos from the scene showed a grey Volkswagen Tiguan with several bullet holes in the windshield. The SUV appeared to have crashed into a small tree. A body was lying behind the vehicle covered by a blanket.

IHIT’s new gang homicide team “was assigned to investigate and has made significant progress since the outset,” Dhesi said. “Following the evidence trail, investigators have identified several persons of interest and believe multiple individuals were involved in the planning and execution of this targeted shooting.”

IHIT said Minhas was known to police and had alleged ties to organized crime.

Dhesi said Monday investigators have found evidence that the Charger was in Abbotsford near the U.S. border and in the Fleetwood area of Surrey before to the shooting.

“This vehicle stands out and we urge anyone that has any information on the vehicle and/or the occupants to come forward and speak to IHIT,” Dhesi said.

“This is a tragic event for Mr. Minhas’s family, and they are asking anyone with information about this homicide to come forward and assist in getting answers about the loss of their son.”

In a statement, Minhas’s parents said they were heartbroken and “desperately seeking answers about what happened to our son.

“He was tragically killed in a gang-related incident, and since that day, our lives have been turned upside down as we cope with this unimaginable loss,” they said.

“If you were present, heard anything, or saw something, please come forward. You may hold the key to helping us understand why this happened to our son. Even if he is not coming back, all we want is the truth and closure. As parents, we need to know why this happened and who is responsible. No one should lose their child like we have.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca .
