Heads up! Phones put pedestrians at increased risk: Vernon RCMP

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is reminding pedestrians and motorists that staying safe on our roads is a shared responsibility.

As daylight hours decrease and weather conditions change, pedestrians become increasingly difficult to see. Distraction adds another layer of risk, and one simple action can make a significant difference – put your phone away.

Looking down at a cellphone while walking distracts from seeing an approaching vehicle, noticing a changing traffic signal, or recognizing other hazards. Earbuds and headphones also reduce your awareness of traffic around you.

“More and more we’re seeing people near traffic staring down at their phones,” said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer. “Your attention needs to be on the activity around you. When you approach an intersection or step into a crosswalk, even if you have the right of way, put your phone away, look up, and ensure it’s safe to cross before stepping out. Messages, videos, and scrolling can wait.”

Some safety reminders for pedestrians include:

• Heads up, phones down: Put away devices and pay attention to your surroundings

• Be seen and predictable: Use crosswalks, obey signals, and wear bright or reflective clothing in low light

• Make sure it’s safe: Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road. Never assume you’ve been seen

But the responsibility doesn’t rest solely with pedestrians.

As a driver, you should:

• Eliminate distractions: Put your phone away and keep your attention on the road

• Expect pedestrians: Scan crosswalks and intersections carefully, especially when turning

• Slow down and be ready to stop: Adjust your speed for darkness, weather, visibility, and road conditions

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
