BURSTNorthern B.C. businesses and First Nations development corporations will be able to apply for $2.7 million in new provincial and federal funding beginning Sept. 2.
B.C. Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Sheila Malcolmson announced the funding in Prince Rupert on Aug. 28.
“Today, we’re funding $2.7 million more to help businesses adapt, grow, and create and retain jobs in the North,” Malcolmson said.
Tamara Davidson, MLA for North Coast–Haida Gwaii, said the funding would support communities across northern B.C.
“We know that when local people have access to good jobs and strong local economies, our communities will thrive,” Davidson said.
The funding will be delivered through two programs administered by Northern Development Initiative Trust under Phase 2 of the Province’s Rural and Remote Employment Initiatives Fund.
The Business Diversification and Sustainability program will provide $1.8 million for small and medium-sized businesses. Grants of up to $200,000 will cover up to 75 per cent of eligible costs for equipment, technology and capital projects intended to expand markets, diversify operations and advance productivity.
A further $900,000 will be available to First Nations development corporations through the First Nations Business Development Capacity Building program.
“This foundational support enables communities to transition from passive participants to active drivers of major regional projects,” said Bess Leeson, Business Development Officer, Tricorp.
The Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce also welcomed the funding.
“We are grateful to have this funding from the government to help employers navigate these difficult times,” said Cody Anaka, executive director of the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce.
Applications for the Business Diversification and Sustainability program will be accepted until Oct. 15. The First Nations Business Development Capacity Building program will remain open until June 30, 2027, or until funding is allocated.
