Cory Booker announces his engagement

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) announced his engagement Tuesday, calling his fiancee “one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life.”

The senior New Jersey senator, famously a lifelong bachelor, made the announcement in posts on his social media accounts. He said his fiancee, Alexis Lewis, has “transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love.”

“I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,” Booker said. “We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by such a beautiful community lifting us in love and commitment.”

Lewis reportedly works at a real estate investment firm. She and Booker have been dating for 16 months, NJ.com reported.

Booker’s post included photos of him and Lewis shortly after he proposed, including one of him on one knee holding a ring.

Booker previously dated actress Rosario Dawson, but this is the 56-year-old's first engagement.

The New Jersey Democrat has increasingly taken on a larger national profile within the party and the country in recent years, notably gaining attention earlier this year with his record-breaking 25-hour speech on the Senate floor opposing pending spending cuts in the GOP’s reconciliation bill and President Trump’s agenda more broadly.
