Abbotsford hosting Judo BC Provincial Championships

The Judo BC Provincial Championships are coming to Abbotsford.

Hundreds of athletes of all ages will take over the Ag-Rec Centre for the province’s biggest judo competition from Feb. 6 to 8.

This marks the first time that Abbotsford Judo Club has hosted the event since 2018. Prince George was the host city the past two years and Victoria hosted in 2023 and 2022.

Divisions competing at the provincials include: U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, U21, senior and veteran. Men and women are

Weigh-ins and athlete check-ins occur on the evening of Feb. 6, with competition opening at 8:50 a.m. on Feb. 7. The action continues until 7 p.m. that night and resumes on Feb. 8 starting at 9 a.m. Medals will also be handed out on the final day of competition.

AJC officials said they are looking forward to bringing high-level judo back to Abbotsford.

“It’s a great opportunity to highlight local athletes, community volunteers, and Abbotsford’s role in hosting a major provincial sporting championship,” stated AJC head instructor Layton Keely.

The AJC traditionally does well at provincials and collected 12 medals at the 2025 event. Abbotsford has long been considered a reliable destination for top judo events and has also hosted the Pacific International Judo Championship the past three years.

The AJC was first established in 1981 and the club’s primary goal has been to bring the sport of judo and an understanding of the principles that guide it to Abbotsford and its surrounding communities. The club has helped train athletes who have competed all over the world in its 40-plus years of existence. AJC members Tokue Suda (class of 2008) and Dr. Stephanie Tsang (class of 2011) members have been enshrined in the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame.
