Newsom: Trump deployment of troops to LA a warning to other states

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) claimed that President Trump’s deployment of troops to Los Angeles amidst the ongoing protests against the administration’s immigration raids is a warning to other states.

Newsom was asked by “Pod Save America” host Tommy Vietor what his message is to people in the other 49 states who think “who think, eh, this is just Trump going after crazy California, where all the liberals are like, we'll be fine.”

“To preview things to come. It's a coming attraction,” Newsom said during his Monday night appearance on “Pod Save America.” “I mean you, I'm sure you guys have been saying it. This is what he did to create the conditions that led to the insurrection on January 6th.”

“In the Orwellian nature of this. How about this? I mean, this is the guy lecturing us about protecting law enforcement that pardoned all the people that attacked law enforcement and our institution of democracy, symbolically and substantively,” the California governor said. “I mean, you can't make this stuff up.”

Trump and his allies have railed against Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) for their handling of the protests taking place against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The administration has greenlighted the deployment of another 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, with the total now going up to 4,000. The president has argued that the almost unprecedented mobilization is warranted to help address violence and chaos, with protestors clashing with officers on the ground.

Some demonstrators have vandalized federal property set cars on fire. The Department of Defense has deployed around 700 Marines to the City of Angels to help shield federal buildings and officials.

Newsom told Vietor, "my sense is this is an even more profound moment than it appears," adding that many Californians feel like Trump is "turning the military against the American people."
