Richmond RCMP warns of fraudulent job postings in Chinese
Mounties in Richmond are warning the public about fraudulent job advertisement posters targeting the Chinese community.
The posters are written in Simplified Chinese, and posted on various light posts throughout the city, Richmond RCMP said in a news release on Friday.
The job posters advertise various types of employment such as vacation home house-sitter, caregiver for the elderly, and tea leaves packager. The posters provide a brief description of the job, and a contact phone number.
Investigators have reason to believe that these posters may be used to solicit personal information which may be used to identify potential scam targets.
In one case, a victim who responded to a job poster reported being convinced to make an investment which later turned out to be fraudulent.
Charges to be considered in officer-involved fatal collision near Nakusp
B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office has referred a case involving a police officer and a fatal collision near Nakusp last year to the Crown for consideration of charges.
Shortly after 3 p.m., on Nov. 25, 2024, police located a green 2003 Ford F350 pickup truck that had been reported stolen, travelling south on Highway 6, about one kilometre south of Nakusp, according to the IIO.
One officer driving a marked police vehicle attempted to stop the vehicle, but a short time later, the pickup truck was involved in a single-vehicle collision, leaving the highway and crashing into a ditch.
The man driving the vehicle was killed in the collision. A female passenger was arrested before being taken to the hospital and later released.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and started an investigation.
Chief civilian director Jessica Berglund reviewed the evidence and determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that the officer may have committed driving offences.
As a result, the IIO has forwarded a report to the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
While the matter is with Crown, the IIO will not provide any further details.
