BURSTFrench climber Zélia Avezou recently visited Magic Wood in Switzerland and sent New Base Line V14 (8B+), among many other hard boulders. Her ticklist also included two V12/13 problems – One Summer in Paradise and the popular Steppenwolf – as well as three V12s and one V11.
“Lil trip to Magic Wood,” said Avezou on Instagram. “Had some fun, met some cool people, couldn’t help but climb way too much.”
New Base Line V14 is an ultra-classic Magic Wood problem. Bernd Zangerl made the first ascent way back in 2002, originally grading the line V15. With subsequent ascents, the grade settled at V14. Many of climbing’s best have topped the line, including Fred Nicole (who made the second ascent), Dave Graham, Daniel Woods, Paul Robinson, Carlo Traversi, Jimmy Webb, Shauna Coxsey, Giuliano Cameroni, and Katie Lamb, among others. Janja Garnbret sent the problem on her second go back in 2023.
Steppenwolf was also established by Zangerl in 2002 and was initially graded V13. It has seen likely hundreds of repeats, with ascensionists giving it either hard V12 or soft V13.
Avezou is a world-class boulderer. Earlier this year, she topped Heritage V13 in Ticino, and in the late fall of 2025, she topped L’insoutenable légèreté de l’être V13. The 22-year-old climber is perhaps better known for her presence on the World Cup circuit. In May this year, at the first World Cup Boulder event in Keqiao, China, Avezou won her first-ever gold, beating Garnbret by 0.2 points. She won bronze in Villars in 2024, silver in Seoul in 2024, and silver in Salt Lake City in 2025.
