Smithers repeat offender gets jail time for shoplifting

A repeat offender has been sentenced to jail time after a theft from a local business and threats made to a police officer.

On May 19, Logan Solonas was sentenced in relation to theft under $5,000 and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. The court imposed 96 days jail with 12 months probation and a five-year discretionary firearms prohibition.

Earlier this spring, the repeat offender was back in custody following a theft at Shoppers Drug Mart.

In April, Smithers RCMP responded to a report of a theft involving electronic items from the store. When approached by staff, the suspect allegedly stated, “Well, I’m stealing again,” before leaving the store.

Officers later located the suspect at the temporary overnight sheltering area in Veterans Peace Park, where he was identified and arrested for theft.

“During the arrest, Solonas resisted and made threats toward our police officer, stating, ‘I am going to murder you’,” Smithers RCMP said.
