Jorge Díaz-Rullo Flashes V13 in Spain

Jorge Díaz-Rullo has just flashed Jaro V13 (8B) in Cercedilla, Spain. It’s the Spanish climber’s second flash of the grade – he flashed his first V13 earlier this year.

“Making the most of the cool morning breeze to try one of the boulders that was on my list,” said Díaz-Rullo on Instagram. “First ascended by Nacho Sánchez, explosive and only 3 moves long, it was a tough challenge for me. This time everything just flowed and luck was on my side. Definitely an easy one for the grade, but I’m really happy to see some improvements after more than a month of focused training.”

Díaz-Rullo is climbing strong this year. Early this summer, he ticked Andularia V15 (8C) and Hazel Grace V14 (8B+) at Gotthardpass in Ticino, Switzerland, in the period of just a few days. Other hard ascents Díaz-Rullo has made this year include a third ascent of Quiet Storm V14 in Ticino and Street Fighter Sit V13/14 in Alcolea del Pinar, Spain. He sent his hardest boulder two years ago, Muerte por Asfixia V16, in La Pedriza, Spain.

His first V13 flash was not long ago, in June, on Voz Suave Del Mar. “After getting up at 5 am to try Hazel Grace and realising I couldn’t hold onto the holds because of the heat, I ended up on this wall,” he said on his 8a.nu account. “Somehow, I channelled that frustration, which helped me tackle this attempt with determination and without any pressure. It was more about endurance than strength, but still stoked to have achieved what might be my toughest flash ever.”

Díaz-Rullo is one of the best sport climbers in the world. The 27-year-old has climbed at least eight routes graded 5.15b, two 5.15b/c, and two 5.15c. In February 2023, he made the FA of Mejorando la Samfaina 5.15c in Margalef, Spain. Later in October of that year, he climbed Bibliographie 5.15c in Céüse. In August 2024, he climbed Adam Ondra’s Change with kneepads in Flatanger, calling it 5.15b/c. He also repeated Ondra’s Move and called it 5.15b/c. Earlier this year, he finally clipped the chains on his multi-year mega-project, Café Colombia, grading the route 5.15d. It has not yet been repeated.
