Manslaughter plea in 2022 Penticton killings brings jail sentence

One of five people charged in relation to a 2022 Penticton double homicide pleaded guilty to manslaughter on April 23 and will spend another 451 days in jail.

Jilane Faith King, 43, had been charged with first-degree murder of Douglas Barker and accessory to murder after the fact of the death of Alannah Brown in 2022.

On April 23, she appeared in Penticton Provincial Court to plead guilty to manslaughter in relation to the death of Barker, for which she received a sentence of two years’ jail less a day.

King was one of four people charged in 2025 in connection to the deaths, with Yves “Oliver” Grenier charged with two counts of first-degree murder in March of 2026.

The circumstances around the offence were not read publicly into the record, as both Crown and defence counsel agreed that sharing the unredacted statement of facts could prejudice a jury ahead of a trial for Grenier.

The trial for Grenier — and for Simon Bourbonnais, who is charged with manslaughter and interference with a dead body — is currently scheduled for December 2026, according to B.C.’s online court service records.

The bodies of Barker and Brown were discovered by Summerland firefighters responding to a reported blaze on Sept. 15, 2022.

The pair had been last seen the day before, the RCMP said at the time.

Unusually, King, through her counsel, said that she was willing to have her 278 days already spent in custody count one-for-one, instead of the more common 1.5-to-1 credit most other cases receive.

In addition to the agreed statement of facts being silently read by Judge Lynette Jung and accepted by the court, several pieces of case law presented by King’s counsel were also accepted and silently read instead of being shared aloud with the court.

Other relevant facts were also entered into evidence and then sealed.

An emotional King briefly addressed the court. Her defence noted that she has struggled with substance use, namely fentanyl and cocaine, and that since being arrested, she has sought out programs to address her addictions.

Following the completion of the remaining 451 days in jail, followed by three years of probation.

On release, King is set to move into a residential treatment facility in Victoria instead of returning to Penticton.

King received a lifetime firearms ban as a result of previous convictions for violence, as well as a no-contact order with the others accused in the deaths of Barker and Brown.

The charge of accessory to murder after the fact for King was stayed by the Crown following the sentencing.

The other two changed in the 2022 murders have not been named thus far by the Penticton Western.
