Extortion-related shooting in Surrey targets house a second time

File photo of police at a Surrey residence shot at on May 20. The same house was the target of another extortion-related shooting on Thursday morning.

A residence in Surrey was the target of a repeat extortion-related shooting early Thursday in the South Newton neighbourhood.

The Surrey Police Service says shortly after 4 a.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting outside a residence in the area of 57 Avenue and 148 Street.

Investigators say the residence was unoccupied at the time of the shooting and no one was injured.

They believe the shooting is extortion related because of previous threats and a shooting outside the residence on May 20. No one was injured in that shooting either.

SPS’s extortion response team is investigating.

Anyone with information about this shooting, including security or dash-cam video, or who may know the identities of the suspects is asked to contact police at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

There have been more than 100 extortion-related shootings in Surrey this year, targeting B.C.’s South Asian community.

Last fall, the City of Surrey set up a $250,000 reward fund for tips that lead to arrests and convictions in extortion cases.
