Lynn Hill Once Tried to Free Climb The Great Arch in Scotland

The Great Arch is an eye-catching line on the island of Pabbay in Scotland. In 1996, Lynn Hill and Dave “Cubby” Cuthbertson attempted to make first free ascent while being filmed by the BBC. In the end, they didn’t make a full free ascent, but their efforts were documented for a film called The Face.

Then Steve McClure and Lucy Creamer attempted to free it, with McClure getting through the first crux before falling at the roof. In 2013, Dave MacLeod and Donald King made the first free ascent at E8 6c, ead MacLeod’s story here.

A new film called The Great Arch by Robbie Phillips features the full history of the steep line. As the film description reads, “Journey to the wild island of Pabbay, where towering sea cliffs and untold history frame one of Scotland’s greatest climbing challenges. The Great Arch follows Robbie Phillips as he steps into the legacy of legends, in a story of adventure, discovery, and the edge of possibility.” Watch the trailer below.
