Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot while speaking at a Wednesday event at a Utah college campus, authorities have confirmed.
Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, appeared to be struck by a gunshot in video from the event. After a shot fired, attendees ran from the event at the Orem campus.
“We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie,” said Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA, according to The Associated Press.
Here's what we know:
- FBI Director Kash Patel said his agency is monitoring the situation;
- Campus authorities said on X a suspect is in custody;
- Law enforcement told AP that Kirk is hospitalized in critical condition;
- Bystanders said he was shot near the neck during the event, the Utah-based Deseret News reported.
As news broke of the incident, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and right-wing pundits took to social media to condemn the incident.
“We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” Trump said on Truth Social.
“Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father,” Vice President Vance wrote on social media.
