Several properties evacuated after train derailment east of Cranbrook

Canadian National Railway freight cars sit at the CPKC Waterfront Layover Yard in 2024 in Vancouver.

Five properties have been evacuated after a train derailed in a rural neighbourhood east of Cranbrook Saturday.

The Regional District of East Kootenay said a state of local emergency has been declared and the residents of five homes in the area have been ordered to leave after the train derailed at about 7 a.m.

The Transportation Safety Board said details were limited, but confirmed it has deployed two investigators to the site of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City derailment in a Cranbrook subdivision.

They will assess and examine the site and begin gathering information.

Postmedia has reached out to CPKC for more information.
