Mace rival highlights congresswoman's past anti-Trump remarks in new ad

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette’s (R) gubernatorial campaign launched an ad campaign on Tuesday attacking Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) over the congresswoman's past criticisms of President Trump.

The spot, titled “Never Trump Nancy,” features a past interview with Mace in which she says she does not believe Trump has a future in the GOP. The ad also notes that Mace hosted a fundraiser for Trump critic and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) in 2021 and voted to certify former President Biden’s win over Trump that same year.

The ad also includes past clips of Trump dubbing the congresswoman “Crazy Nancy Mace” at a rally.

“She’s a terrible person and she knows no idea what she’s doing,” Trump says in the spot.

While Mace was once publicly critical of Trump, she has since become one of his most vocal supporters in Congress. The congresswoman has referred to herself on the campaign trail as "Trump in heels."

The ad comes after Evette’s campaign launched a month-long, million dollar highlighting the lieutenant governor’s support for the president.

Evette and Mace are two of five Republicans running in what is shaping up to be a contentious primary in the election to replace Gov. Henry McMaster (R ). The primary is turning out to be a battle for Trump's endorsement in the state, which the president won by nearly 18 points last November.

Early polling shows Mace and state Attorney General Alan Wilson (R ) leading the pack. A South Carolina Policy Council poll released late last month showed Mace leading the crowded field with 16 percent of voters who said they identified as Republicans while Wilson closely trailed at 15 percent. Evette came in with eight percent support, followed by Norman at six percent. State Sen. Josh Kimbrell (R) received three percent support. The same poll showed 52 percent of voters were undecided, suggesting there is ample opportunity for the candidates to bolster their support.
