BURSTWord of mouth helped a plan for a grass volleyball tournament in Houston grow into a well-attended Aug. 22, 2026 event at Four Seasons Park.
This was the second annual grass volleyball tournament organized by local residents Braden Vanderwoerd and Luke Kronemeyer, who are both headed to college this fall.
By the day of the tournament, six women’s and nine men’s teams of four players each had signed up. Teams came from Prince Rupert to the Fraser Valley and even included one German international student. Entry fees were $60 a team.
Play began at 9 a.m. with six games being played simultaneously and finished at 5 p.m.
The tournament featured popsicles, drinks and event tents for shelter and refreshment. Custom “H Town Grass Volleyball” T-shirts were sold for $30 to help fund the event, and matching stickers were given to all participants.
The Weapons of Grass Destruction women’s team emerged as the final winners, taking home bragging rights, tournament T-shirts, and a 3D-printed trophy.
It is unknown if the organizers will offer another event next year, but this year’s tournament was definitely great for the players and the spectators.
And full credit to the Houston works crew for its diligent and much appreciated work in preparing the playing area.
