Toby Roberts, the Paris Olympic gold medallist in sport climbing, won the Boulder World Cup in Innsbruck, edging out Sorato Anraku by 0.2 points. Roberts, a 20-year-old British climber, has competed internationally since 2019, amassing experience in both Boulder and Lead disciplines. His early season results in 2025 were 15th, 15th, 20th, and 51st, reflecting a challenging start after his Olympic victory in 2024.
In Innsbruck, Roberts climbed four boulder problems in the final round, securing the win through consistent performance across the problems. His victory marked a significant rebound from post-Olympic struggles, which he attributed to mental and physical fatigue following the Paris Games. Roberts expressed disbelief at the outcome, stating he aimed to climb to his full potential and enjoy the competition. He described the experience as surreal, emphasising his focus on giving maximum effort despite earlier setbacks.
Roberts said: “I’m at a loss for words, I don’t really know what just happened. This season has been quite hard, but going into this event I wanted to give everything, and to be honest I’m a little bit starstruck. I’m just so happy. I definitely struggled a bit post-Olympics, and when I started the season it hit me and I started to feel quite bad. I just wanted to go out there and climb the way I know I can. This competition has been incredible, I enjoyed every moment and to get away with a gold medal doesn’t even feel real.”
