Kyle Palmieri scored twice, leading the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Tuesday at UBS Arena Elmont, N.Y.
Matias Maccelli also scored for the Isles (3-3-0), with llya Sorokin making 23 saves to pick up the win in goal. Max Sasson and Brock Boeser replied for the Canucks (2-6-0), who have dropped five straight games. Leevi Merilainen took the goaltending loss, stopping 35 of 38 shots.
The Isles opened the scoring 14:57 into the first period. After a failed Vancouver clearing attempt, Matthew Kessel flipped a shot toward the net from the right point and it was tipped in by Palmieri for his first goal of the year.
Just 53 second later Maccelli added his first of the season. Following a Zeev Buium turnover, Schaefer fed Maccelli on the left side and his high shot beat Merilainen.
Shots after one period favoured the Islanders, 11-7.

Sasson pulled the Canucks within one 7:52 into the second period, swooping in on the left side to pick up a touch pass from Arshdeep Bains and whipping a shot past the glove of Sorokin. Sasson has two goals on the year.
Boeser evened things at 2-2 on the power play at 18:55, converting a nice feed from centre Elias Pettersson for his second of the year. It was Boeser’s 80th career power-play tally, moving him past Todd Bertuzzi into fifth place on the all-time Canucks list.
Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 18 apiece.
Palmieri restored the New York lead 5:38 into the third, firing a screen shot past Merilainen after some sustained pressure.
Late in the period, a cross-check to the back of Vancouver’s Liam Öhgren from Ondrej Palat went uncalled, and shortly after Buium was assessed a hooking penalty. The Canucks pulled Merilainen for an extra attacker and with 15.6 seconds left, New York’s Adam Pelech took a penalty giving Vancouver a 5-on-4 advantage, but they were unable to draw even.
The Canucks continue their six-game road swing Thursday, when they visit the Florida Panthers (4 p.m.).
