Windstorm knocks out power for most of Smithers Saturday night

Power has been restored for thousands in the Bulkley Valley overnight (March 7) but many are still in the dark.

Yesterday’s windstorm saw strong gusts that knocked over trees in many places around Smithers and Telkwa.

The Town of Smithers opened an Emergency Operations Centre and is monitoring the windstorm.

“We are aware of high winds that have downed trees and affected power in the Town of Smithers. The storm has affected communications with emergency dispatch services. We will provide information to the public through official sources as it becomes available,” stated the town’s Facebook page. “If you have an emergency situation or are aware of trees blocking roadways or emergency situations or within the Smithers fire boundary please call 250-847-0900.”

As of Sunday morning, 2894 BC Hydro customers were still without power.

BC Hydro’s website says the cause of the all the outages were trees down across wires. There is no estimated time for it to turn back on. There are currently no crews assigned to most of the outages and others have been suspended.

Wind gusts on Sunday expected to continue throughout the morning.
