Alpine Club of Canada is Building a Mount Robson Hut

The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) has announced a coming addition to their hut network – the Byron Caldwell Hut at Mount Robson. This hut has been more than two decades in the making and the ACC needs people’s help to bring it across the finish line. As of March 27, nearly $400,000 had been raised of the $1.2 million – donate here.

“We are excited to officially launch the fundraising campaign for the ACC’s first hut in Mount Robson Provincial Park,” the ACC said. “While we’re making great progress, leadership gifts are still crucial to making this vision a reality. Your support will make all the difference in bringing this much needed project to life. Donations can be made easily online to help us reach our goal.”

The hut is named in honour of Byron Caldwell, a Canadian mountaineer who had a deep love for Mount Robson, this hut will be a cherished addition to the ACC’s network and a welcoming gateway to the area. For more information visit here.

The ACC was founded in 1906 by Arthur Oliver Wheeler, who served as its first president, and Elizabeth Parker, a journalist for the Manitoba Free Press. The ACC operate nearly 40 huts in Canada’s backcountry – learn more about their huts here.

About the Campaign: The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) has launched The Spiral Road Campaign to build a state-of-the-art backcountry hut at Robson Pass, within Mount Robson Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. For the Texqa’kallt people of the Secwépemc-Shuswap Nation, Mount Robson is known as Yexyexéscen (Yuh-hai-has-kun), which translates to “The Mountain of the Spiral Road.” This name comes from the distinct layers of shale and limestone on the mountain, which form a spiral-like pattern as they wind around its slopes.

Why This Matters: A First for Mount Robson – A Backcountry Refuge for Generations. For the first time, a dedicated, year-round backcountry refuge will be built in Mount Robson Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sustainable, permanent hut will provide a safe haven for climbers, hikers, and explorers while minimizing human impact on this fragile alpine environment.

Preserve and Protect Mount Robson’s Wild Spaces: As more people explore this breathtaking landscape, the ACC feels a responsibility to lead the way in stewardship of the area. This hut will help reduce environmental impact by centralizing usage, preventing informal campsites, reducing human-wildlife conflicts, providing economies in lighting and cooking for multiple groups, and making the removal of human waste more efficient, all of which make our collective environmental footprint smaller.

Honour Your Connection to Mount Robson: For many, Mount Robson is a place of challenge, reflection, and adventure – a peak that has inspired climbers, hikers, and dreamers for generations. Whether you have stood beneath its towering summit, explored its trails, or hope to visit one day, this is your opportunity to give back to a place that holds deep meaning.
This project is also a tribute to Byron Caldwell, a passionate climber and beloved friend who lost his life in a climbing accident in 2018. His legacy lives on through this initiative, helping others safely experience Mt. Robson, which he loved.

A Legacy of Stewardship and Adventure: Since 1906, The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) has worked to protect, celebrate, and improve access to Canada’s mountain spaces. Supporting this campaign is about more than building a hut, it’s continuing a legacy of responsible adventure and conservation, ensuring that Mount Robson remains a place of inspiration for generations to come.
