President Trump is set to meet Monday with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, who has become a central player in the administration's push to deport illegal immigrants and alleged gang members.
Bukele has made cracking down on crime a central feature of his political rise in recent years, and is housing hundreds of deported U.S. immigrants in a notorious maximum security prison.
The Trump administration is facing two legal battles involving its multi-million-dollar contract with Bukele's government, making the relationship a test case for how the president can use foreign countries in his deportation push.
The Supreme Court last week ruled the Trump administration should facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man and father of three who was mistakenly sent to El Salvador, contradicting a previous court order.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) argued in a court filing Sunday that federal courts have “no authority” to force the Trump administration to seek his return, while Abrego Garcia’s lawyers suggested in a filing Saturday the government should be held in contempt of court.
The administration has also been admonished in court for apparently ignoring a judge's order to turn around planes transporting deportees to the El Salvador prison.
Bukele mocked the judge's order at the time, "Oopsie… Too late" in a post on X.
