Man charged in pair of stranger attacks in downtown Vancouver

Vancouver police arrested a 29-year-old man in a pair of stranger assaults in downtown Vancouver on Aug. 3, 2025.

A man has been charged after two unprovoked assaults in downtown Vancouver Sunday, including one that left a tourist injured.

Vancouver police said the first occurred at around 11:30 a.m. Sunday when a 40-year-old man walking near Granville and West Pender streets was approached by a stranger who pushed him several times before walking away.

A short while later, the same stranger approached a couple walking on Granville Street and threw one of them on the ground before leaving.

Some bystanders saw the assault and chased a man to a nearby lane, where they restrained him until police arrived.

The victim in the second assault, a 30-year-old woman visiting from Germany, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Daniel James Johnny, 29, has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of assault by choking.

A man of the same name and age has a lengthy criminal history including assault, uttering threats, and breaches of probation orders dating back to 2022 in Takla Landing, a small community north of Fort St. James, and Prince George, and more recently in New Westminster and Surrey.
