RCMP have persons of interest in connection with Terrace bowling alley fire

Two people are being considered as persons of interest by the Terrace RCMP in connection with the early morning fire last month that destroyed the Terrace Bowling Lanes building on Lazelle Ave.

Within hours of the May 21 blaze, Terrace fire chief Joel Brousson identified the fire’s origin as the north front exterior corner of the decades-old structure.

The fire was first reported by patrolling Terrace RCMP officers in the early morning hours, resulting in nearly 20 Terrace firefighters plus additional members of the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department being called to the scene.

Dating back to the late 1950s and built with surplus material from the Second World War, the quonset-hut style structure burned quickly.

By 7 a.m., heavy equipment was already on the scene to begin tearing down what was left of the structure to give firefighters better access to the flames.

All that remains now is the front of the building.

The city purchased the property in 2019 in anticipation of one day of needing the property to expand the city hall and the fire department complex, which are located next door.

“Due to the size, the city will issue a request for proposals to select a contractor to clear the property. We don’t have an exact timeline on when the property will be cleared right now,” a city statement of June 3, 2026 indicated.

“The General Investigation Section of the RCMP has identified two people of interest and is still actively investigating,” the city statement added.
