BURSTAlex Megos has flashed Baby Cakes 5.14d at Nowra, Australia, adding another elite first-go send to his already impressive resume. Established by Ryan Sklenica, the route links Cheesecake 5.14d into Little Baby Cheeses 5.14d. The ascent marks Megos’ second confirmed 9a flash.
Megos revealed on 8a.nu that careful prep and good conditions were key to his flash of Baby Cakes. “It was definitely a very dry day for Nowra,” he said. “Apparently it can be quite wet and seep a lot, but we were lucky. I watched a video the night before and got the holds explained by Ryan and Gorge. Then on the morning of the flash they both went up on the route and Ryan showed me the first half and Gorge showed me the second half. I set off and pretty much executed everything very well.”
The 32-year-old German is widely regarded as one of the best climbers in history. He became the first person to onsight 5.14d with Estado Crítico and has since onsighted TCT 5.14d, Underground 5.14d, Intermezzo XY Gelöst 5.14d, and Mr. Big 5.14d. His rapid ascents also include La Rambla 5.15a on his second go, Biographie 5.15a in a session, and Demencia Senil and Red Ram (both 5.15a) in three attempts. He also established Perfecto Mundo 5.15c and Bibliographie 5.15c.
Away from the crags, Megos has also built a strong competition career, recording 10 World Cup podiums and three World Championship medals.
