Vancouver mayor, VPD to present preliminary report into Lapu Lapu Day tragedy

People continue to leave flowers and pay their condolences at several memorials along Fraser Street after the Lapu Lapu Day tragedy in Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Police Department will present the early findings from a joint review of event safety on Friday, following the deadly tragedy at last month’s Lapu Lapu Day festival.

On April 27, the day after a driver plowed through a crowded Filipino street festival in east Vancouver killing 11 people and injuring many others, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim announced he was ordering a full review of event safety measures.

Sim will present the initial staff report at a news conference Friday morning at city hall, where he will appear alongside interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai.

A Vancouver man was arrested at the scene of the street festival and has been charged with multiple counts of murder. He made his first court appearance earlier this month and was sent for a psychiatric assessment.

The tragedy also prompted B.C. Premier David Eby to announce that the province would launch an independent commission investigating event safety. Christopher Hinkson, a former chief justice of the B.C. Supreme Court, has been appointed to conduct that review and Eby said the former judge is expected to report back by the end of June.
