Abbotsford Canucks’ Google numbers decrease year-over-year

Similar to the team’s tumble in the standings, the Abbotsford Canucks’ Google Trends data experienced a significant drop year-over-year.

Google Trends statistics obtained by The News show a decrease of approximately 70 per cent when the time period of July 2025 to July 2026 is compared to July 2024 to July 2025.

Google Trends track Google searches for terms over a set period of time and allow users the ability to look at historical information and also compare search terms.

The 2025-26 season saw the worldwide search term ‘Abbotsford Canucks’ reach its highest peak on the week of Oct. 18 to 25, just ahead of the team’s home opener that season on Oct. 24. That week saw the term receive a relative score of 100, which is the maximum score for the term when compared to the rest of the year time period.

The second biggest spike over the past year was a relative score of 94, which occurred during the week of Nov. 8 to 15. Abbotsford played four games over that time period. A spike of 93 happened for the term from Jan. 10 to 17, with four games again being played that week. Spikes of 85 (Dec. 13 to 20) and 72 (March 28 to April 4) were the other significant bumps over the past year.

Looking back on the five-year history of the search term, 2025-26 was the lowest of any season and only reached a high relative score of eight. Last year’s Calder Cup run was by far the high point in franchise history for the term, with a relative score of 100. The Abbotsford Canucks search term outpaced the Vancouver Canucks search term for all of June 2025 and was even in late-May 2025.

The other historical high point for the term was a relative score of 18 for the month of April 2023. That score coincided with the team’s first-ever playoff series win over the Bakersfield Condors and the second round series against the Calgary Wranglers.

Comparing the Abbotsford Canucks’ Google Trends numbers to other local pro sports teams also discovers some interesting results. Abbotsford was about even over the year with the PWHL’s Vancouver Goldeneyes. The expansion club began play on Nov. 21, 2025 and for that week their Google searches were four times the Abbotsford Canucks. The Goldeneyes also edged out the Abbotsford Canucks 39-30 the week of Dec. 13 to 20 and 31-28 the week of Jan. 17 to 24. The Goldeneyes had more Google activity during the hockey season, but Abbotsford had more throughout the year and was more consistent.

Looking at the Abbotsford Canucks’ numbers to more established teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Whitecaps and BC Lions paints a different picture. The NHL Canucks and the Whitecaps led the way locally, with the Whitecaps actually having the highest relative spike of any team over the past year. They achieved a score of 100 during the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 6, which was when the team was battling for the MLS Cup against Miami. The Whitecaps also dominated most of August, with the NHL Canucks controlling the rest of the year. The BC Lions were consistent for much of the summer and fall and actually scored higher than the Whitecaps in September and November.

The News again compared social media numbers year-over-year of the Abbotsford Canucks with the four other largest professional sports franchises in the province – the BC Lions, Vancouver Goldeneyes, Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Whitecaps. This marks the first year that the Goldeneyes have been included on this list.

Abbotsford continued to see strong growth across all three major platforms, but the big winner of the past year was the Whitecaps. They experienced extreme growth on both Facebook and Instagram and that could be due to a number of factors including the presence of star Thomas Muller, the team’s run to the MLS Cup and the news surrounding the sale of the club.

The Abbotsford Canucks return to action inside the Rogers Forum for the team’s home opener against the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Saturday, Oct. 17.
