President Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, after two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot and killed Wednesday night outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington.
The suspect walked into the museum, where he was apprehended, and yelled, “Free, free Palestine” once he was arrested, police officials said. The two victims have been identified as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim.
“They had a productive discussion. They discussed many things, including of course the tragic shooting that took place here in Washington, D.C., last night,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Leavitt also noted that Trump is “saddened and outraged” by the shooting and spoke about the young couple at the White House daily press briefing, citing that the embassy referred them as a “star couple.”
“The evil of antisemitism must be irradicated from our society,” Leavitt said, adding that Attorney General Pam Bondi told her Thursday morning that the perpetrator will be prosecuted.
Trump during the call with Netanyahu “expressed deep sorrow over the shocking murder in Washington of two Israeli embassy employees, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, of blessed memory,” according to a readout from the prime minister's office.
“The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for the efforts he and his administration are making to combat antisemitism in the United States," it continued.
The two leaders also discussed Iran ahead of the nuclear talks with the U.S. in Rome over the weekend, Leavitt said.
Trump earlier Thursday condemned the shooting, saying the suspect’s actions were “based obviously on antisemitism” and calling for an end to “hatred and radicalism.”
Bondi, who was on the scene Wednesday night and again Thursday morning, also spoke with Netanyahu following the incident, the Israeli leader said. According to Netanyahu’s office, she conveyed to him that Trump “is involved in managing the event, and that the US will bring the murderer to justice.”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said on social platform X that the subject is in custody and was interviewed last night. He added in a separate post that the penalties against the shooter “will be harsh as we tighten up this investigation and run down any additional leads.”
