A French climber named Margareta Morin died while attempting to climb Kanchenjunga over the weekend. It was her first attempt to climb a peak over 8,000 metres. She was 63 years old.
“She was taken ill while attempting to climb the world’s third highest peak on May 10,” said Yogendra Tamang of Peak 15 Adventure in The Himalayan Times. Tamang was quoting mountain guide Tendi Sherpa, who was at camp three.
Due to poor conditions, a rescue attempt could not be made. “The French embassy in Kathmandu and her family were informed about the incident.” said Tamang. Also on Kanchenjunga, well-known British expedition climber Adrian Hayes required a rescue from above camp four. Adrian Hayes was suffering from altitude sickness after reaching the summit.
This marks the third death of the spring climbing season, which runs from April to early June. Recently, an American climber died while attempting Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain.
