A 28-year-old man is dead after a waterfront fight in Maple Ridge.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, Maple Ridge RCMP were called to an altercation at the Port Haney wharf in the 22300-block of River Road.

A man was found with life-threatening injuries and died despite the efforts of first responders.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in and is working with the RCMP serious crime unit, a forensics team and the B.C. Coroners Service.

“Investigators believe this was an isolated and targeted incident, where the parties involved were known to each other,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. Gang activity is not believed to be a factor.

Fong confirmed a weapon was involved but said she could not say what kind “so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation.”

“Thanks to the quick actions taken by Maple Ridge RCMP officers, the scene was contained quickly which allowed investigators to preserve critical evidence,” said Fong.

“A number of witness interviews are underway as investigators piece together the events leading up to the altercation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this very difficult time.”

Anyone with information is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca .
